Welcome Candidates!
Thank you to all of you for showing an interest in continuing your Water Safety and Swimming knowledge. I am very excited to share my knowledge, experiences and one of a kind ideas with you!
My courses are jam packed with information and you may find the workload and amount of information overwhelming. Don’t fret, I have clearly outlined your homework assignments in your candidate package and on this website. I will also go over the homework assignments with you each day, and when available, give you class time to work on them. If you have questions…Don’t delay – ask them! I can be contacted by email or by phone for questions that you need answered outside of class time.
There are two parts to the completion of the AWSI and WSI courses. The first is the Core of the Course. This is the “meat and potatoes” part of the certification. This area will help create your understanding of the program, teaching methods and strategies. By completion of this part of the course, you will have the beginning tools you need to be a successful instructor. The evaluation criteria for this portion of the course is located on page A.1 of your Instructor Manual.
The second part of this course is the Teaching Experience. This is where you will be able to practice what you have learned in a real class setting. Over the course, you be volunteering in lessons. Under the supervision of a trained instructor, you will complete 8-12 hours of teaching experience. There are specific assignments that need to be completed that are located in the appendix section of your instructor manual.
You may or may not complete one or both sections of the course. I will be evaluating you on a continuous basis and you will receive written and verbal feedback as you progress throughout the course. Please feel free to ask for feedback at any time.
By coming to the course, you have already expressed an interest and a desire to educate others about the importance of water safe behaviors. I hope that your experience throughout this course is fun, informative, enlightening and playful – after all, that is how children, as well as ourselves, learn the best. Good luck and I look forward to getting to know each of you over the next few weeks.
