AWSI Homework
I have found that during the courses many of the candidates seem to have questions about the homework assignments, so I will post them here, as well as, I have broken down each assignment and have provided helpful information to different resources.
JOURNALS
After each class and/or lesson experience I will expect you to write a journal entry. This does not have to be long but it does have to be geniune and honest. This is a good time to ask for clarification or advice on something you have question about because I will be reading them the next class. Topics will be assigned each class.
PEER TEACH(S)
You will be teaching your fellow peers in the AWSI class, different topics. These will be assigned on a daily basis. When doing a peer teach, it is necessary that you make TWO copies of your activity plan (which will be REQUIRED for each activity, as you be submitting one to me for review and feedback.
1) Teaching Method Peer Teach
A) You will be assigned a Developing Swimmer Progression
B) You will teach the class using the DIRECT METHOD the progression (ie. front float) (5 min)
C) Then you will play a game using the progression (5 min)
D) You must develop an activity plan
2) Skill and Water Safety Peer Teach
A) You should have received a swim kids level. If you didn't please email me.
B) Look at "Red Cross Swim Kids-Instructor Worksheets". You can find these at www.instructornetwork.ca under “Become an Instructor". Scoll to the bottom of the page and click on "AWSI Documents".
C) Choose ONE skill under the category "Skills and Water Safety"
D) Find your level and on the second page of your level it tells you what your students must be able to do. ( this information will help you to know what to include in your peer teach)
E) Create an activity that the "students" will be able to engage in
F You MUST include a VISUAL AID (something that your students can interact with to assist their learning, ie. poster, pictures, puzzle etc.. This does NOT include equipment found at the pool (lifejackets, noodles, kickboards etc…)
G Create an activity plan for the item assigned to you
3) Stroke Peer Teach:
a) create an activity plan for the stroke component I have assigned to you
***HINT** LOOK AT THE STROKES SECTION IN YOUR MANUAL!!!
b) come up with two errors that are common with the stroke component (the class will try these)
c) come up with two drills to correct the errors (one error, one drill, and one error one drill IN TOTAL)
ASSIGNMENTS

#1-Attendance and Safety Rule
a) For one of your classes, ask the instructor at the very BEGINNING of the class to take attendance
b) You will discuss a pool rule with the class. This can be done in or out of the water and should only take 1-2 minutes

a) Choose one of your experience lessons
b) Create a game with an Aim (a.k.a. purpose, ie. to reinforce a skill)
c) Make an activity plan for the game

Assignment #4-Skill and Water Safety Activity
a) To plan for this activity you must look at the worksheets on www.instructornetwork.ca (go to Red Cross Swim Kids or Preschool-Instructor Worksheets)
b) Choose one of your experience lessons and look at THAT worksheet
c) Under the “skill and water safety” section choose ONE item to teach to the class
d) Make an activity plan

a) look at the instructor worksheets
b) Choose one of your experience lessons and look at THAT worksheet
c) Choose ONE fitness item (NOT the distance/time swim) and make an activity plan for that skill to teach

c) Then you will teach the "actual" stroke
d) Create an activity plan
